80-year-old Gordon & MacPhail set a new auction record
Whisky by Gordon & MacPhail set a new record for the world's oldest single malt sold at auction at $193,000 per bottle. Whisky specialist Gordon & MacPhail last month unveiled Generations 80 Years Old, the world's oldest single malt Scotch.
This rare whisky comes from The Glenlivet Distillery, which is the oldest legally operating distillery in the Speyside area. The 80-year-old whisky comes from a single cask that was assembled in 1940 under the supervision of George and John Urquhart, members of the family that founded Gordon & MacPhail. Only 250 such bottles were produced and presented in a decanter and oak box designed by architect Sir David Adjaye.
On October 7, the No. 1 decanter went under the hammer at Sotheby's Hong Kong, along with the framed fragment of the original barrel and a lithograph by Adjaye.
The winner of the auction will also receive a whisky tasting for four in London, hosted by Gordon & MacPhail's director of prestige, Stephen Rankin, with Adjaye. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Scottish charity Trees for Life.
Jonny Fowle, Sotheby's spirits specialist, said: “Since the news of the existence of whisky that has been aged in oak for 80 years, there has been a lot of excitement. For those who are lucky enough to try it, including myself, it is a unique whisky that not only stays on the palate, but also stays in your memory for a long time.”
