Chivas Regal releases Scotch whisky aged in tequila casks

Scotch Whisky Association announced new rules last year that expanded the variety of casks authorized for maturing Scotch whisky. It seems that the producers liked the freedom in experimenting with the methods of maturation. At the beginning of this year, Dewar released the blended whisky finished in Mezcal casks, and in April Chivas Regal joined with the release of Chivas Extra 13 series - a collection of 13-year-old blended whiskies aged in various types of casks.

The new series consists of expressions that aged in Oloroso Sherry Rum, American Rye and Tequila casks. The last one deserves special attention, because according to its producer, Chivas Extra 13 Tequila is the first commercially available Scotch whisky aged in such casks.

“The Extra 13 collection represents new territory for Chivas as we continue to open up the world of Scotch whisky to new audiences and fresh experiences,” said Sandy Hyslop, director of blending at Chivas Brothers, owned by Pernod Ricard. “At Chivas we believe that blended is better – and nowhere is this more evident than with our new collection, which blends exceptional Scotch with a diverse, internationally-inspired palette of flavors.”
